‘Window-shopping is a recreational activity that involves looking in store windows or showcases for fun without intending to buy what one is examining’. Old school, I know! And yes, it does have a hyphen. My lifestyle, and more specifically parenthood, has steered me away from the physical act of shopping, so instead of pressing my nose against the glass, my window-shopping has morphed into….app-surfing. And god it can be fun!
Now you’re probably wondering, what’s the sustainable-leaning POV here - a term penned by the incredibly eloquent and insightful
and by whose generosity I am completely humbled, for including me in her line up of ‘intelligent and thought-provoking style newsletters that I hold dear here’. Just wow ❤️.But here me out on this loose thread of thought. For me, ‘checking in’ on my shopping apps of an evening is akin to flicking through a printed style magazine and turning down the corners on pages where an image has caught me - remember doing this?! There’s something oddly comforting about it. It signals the end of the ‘working’ day, be that the 9-5 or parenting 101. And while it provides a dopamine hit, it is at what I think of as ‘old world’ levels (think pre-Instagram, pre-reels, pre-maximum-consumerism), meaning it is not accompanied with the ‘modern-world’ urge to make a snap purchase. Aside from the ‘and relax’ moment, I see window-shopping as:
An opportunity to view your collective saved images, much like mood boarding, to understand what aesthetic inspires you, and why.
A provider of specific* (see below for why I use this word) inspiration of what to search for preloved - my favourite past-time!
*I love this reminder from
to, where possible, just bite the bullet on the things we want rather than buying cheaper options that fail to satisfy. This is one of the reasons I love preloved shopping so much - it brings the previously unattainable into a much more attainable sphere. So to that end, I purport that window-shopping ain’t all bad.
I thought, as a fun exercise, I’d show you what is currently saved on three of my shopping app wish lists. These are items which I’m unlikely to ever buy or to own (unless they are significantly reduced in the sale or I miraculously find them preloved), so I feel like they are reasonably safe ground for us sustainably-minded folks. So here’s the visual wish list journey.
Net-a-porter
This is my all time favourite shopping app to browse. The styling, the photography, the pieces - it’s just feels so luxurious. I loved Anna’s recent partnership post with them, featuring four outfits for skirt-haters. She featured this Ulla Johnston bag and now I can’t stop thinking about it!
My app wish list contains a real mix of summer pieces, with the Ancient Greek Sandals and Farm Rio dress (swoon), and all year round, with the Lie Studio earrings, Staud bag, Khaite jeans (told you it was aspirational!) and Suzie Kondi top and skirt.

I’m so sad to see this shop and app go! It’s closing at midnight on Sunday, which is the day you will hopefully be reading this post. There’s not much left in stock to be honest, but I felt as though it was a must-include as I have scoured this app many an evening. More inspiration here for those preloved searches with this Raey long-sleeved silk blouse, Matteau dress, 16 Arlington black top, Molly Goddard gathered top, COH horseshoe jeans, Sensi Studio bag and Matteau dress. Seeing all of these images and the ones above collectively, I’ve just realised how on a colour theme they are, I LOVE it.

The OUTNET
I tend to search on The OUTNET app if I’m looking for something specific from perhaps a previous season, or for an event (these are few and far between!). Hence this being a slightly random smorgasbord of items. I couldn’t not search for and wish list this Tove peplum top after seeing it on Thandi - just stunning. The Missoni jumper was inspired by
’s super cute Missoni jumper dress in her recent post ‘Everything I wore in Toulouse’. And I actually bought this Rixo floral dress this week, ahead of a trip which requires ‘dressing for dinner’. I’ll feed back on if it’s a keeper.![](https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/w_474,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ff6191cca-2607-42bb-8409-54a8820887a0_950x1425.avif)

Inspiration and wish list pieces
One of my style inspirations this week came from a most unexpected place indeed - one of my kids! I’ve three girls who all have their own sense of style. From oldest to youngest, I would say ‘quiet cool’, ‘90s chick’ and ‘boho chic’. There’s no prize for guessing which one chose this H&M khaki bomber for herself. It’s the perfect slightly cropped length, with over sized arms, in a divine shade of silvery khaki. Even my husband said, ‘you should get that, it’s so you’. So I managed to swoop it up in the sale this week in kids size 14 - fingers crossed it fits!
I spotted this Anthropologie Rainbow Stone Necklace on Thaarani’s Substack and was instantly drawn to the understated tones and summery vibe. Luckily I’ve a store local to me, so I popped to check it out and walked out wearing it (having paid I should add). I love that this simple piece brings colour and texture to my minimal and often muted outfits (think Ring 1 (black) or Ring 2 (neutrals) on the Tibi colour wheel). See below for today’s happy combo.
