This week I’ve been seeing lots of really inspiring posts and images, to tempt us out of our rather confused summer style (the weather has been really inconsistent here in England) and into autumn/ winter style. One standout post, in this regard, is from stylist
(I’m so excited that she’s finally on here!). In her piece, she treats us to a veritable feast of brown tones and suede pieces, which is exactly where my head is at in terms of the season ahead of us.
BUT I’m trying to keep all of this autumnal gorgeousness within my peripheral vision. I appreciate that it’s not always easy to stay with the style season we’re in, especially when temperatures are soaring in SoCal and making
‘pine for fall’. On my journey towards a more sustainable style, I’m working on being present in the now and with the current iteration of my wardrobe. words spoke to me when she wrote:When I look through my wardrobe, when I wear my clothes, the overwhelming feeling I get is…I’m good.
I genuinely don’t feel like I need anything, nor do I even want anything. I don’t even to want to want anything! I’m indifferent to the fact that in a few days I’ll be packing the same suitcase that I’ve packed for my last four warm weather trips (swimsuits excluded lol). I’m content with wearing and re-wearing what I already have and coming up unexpected combinations of what I already own. I. Am. Good.
What an amazing place to have arrived! I’m working on it and as a way to help myself further along this path, I’ve constructed The Shopping Pyramid - patent pending :) Think of the three R’s in the waste hierarchy - reduce-reuse-recycle - but then let’s apply it to style and to how and what we purchase. Here’s my interpretation and links to my take on these ideas:
Reduce - knowing when and what not to buy, or making informed purchases that will last, style and quality wise:
Reuse - shopping your own wardrobe to create new outfits and combinations with what you already own, using style heroes to inspire you and this clever little ‘Dictionary of Colour Combinations’, and keeping a wardrobe diary:
Recycle - shopping preloved and selling on when something’s not working for you:
We’ve come a long way since I first put pen to paper for My Style Rush, haven’t we? Hopefully there’s something in here and in my other previous posts that will resonate with you and will help you on your journey.
Recycle
Whether it’s age or finally some good shopping sense, I’ve ended up adding quite a few linen pieces to my wardrobe since I hit 40. If you’re a regular reader, you might remember that I bought a preloved pair of Toteme linen-blend trousers at the start of the summer. Despite my best efforts and a trip to the tailor to have them taken in, they have remained unworn. Lesson learnt, I just don’t like a drawstring waist! It makes me feel constrained and uncomfortable. Such as pity as these feel amazing on, but they are being ‘recycled’ and seeking a new home here.
Reduce
So onwards I ventured in my search for the ‘perfect’ pair of linen trousers, for me. I really enjoyed
’s post on ‘The myth of the best’ in which she sagely notes that there is no ‘perfect’ or ‘best’ when it comes to items or advice on our wardrobes. It’ll different for all of us.
My search brought me to an ‘excellent’ pair of linen trousers from Faithfull The Brand in the NAP sale (plus there’s an extra 15% off currently). These are 100% linen, high-waisted (very high) and straight legged, and feel like a very classic piece to add to my wardrobe, that will last, style and quality wise, and ‘reduce’ the purchasing of any further iterations.
Reuse
This dreamboat of a little book - A Dictionary of Colour Combinations - which I posted about last week, has arrived and has already proved to be so useful! It is helping me to ‘browse’ my wardrobe for inspired colour combinations and to ‘reuse’ pieces together that I may not have combined previously. For example, for my outfit shot this week, I scoured my wardrobe to recreate this colour combination that caught my eye, of inky navy (Sleeper Atlanta dress preloved), sienna/ terracotta (A.P.C. clutch preloved) and ‘ecru’ (which is more of a taupe shade) (Aeyde Olga sandals). That’s one outfit sorted for next week’s holiday!
Inspiration and wish list pieces
Lately I’ve been feeling really inspired by the style of Denise Christensen of brands Remain and Rotate. Her style feels Nordic cool, with a simple but contemporary flair. I’ve followed her on IG for a while but it was her head-to-toe monotone outfit below, that features a peplum top (what I was searching for at the time) teamed with oversized jeans that stopped me in my tracks. Then I spotted her combination of casual black tee with textured floral maxi skirt and flip flops - swoon! I will totally be recreating this look with my Zara crochet pencil skirt that I’ve been raving about of late. And the final look combines the colours of the upcoming season, chocolate brown and cherry red.
Speaking of being present, I’ve been prioritising family time these last few weeks, with the girls off school, plus I’ve a date on the couch with my husband now (Saturday night) so I won’t be including any wish list pieces this week. But, I think we’ll survive!
